Do you know where one of the oldest
Christmas markets is located? Neither in Bolzano, nor in Bavaria: in Lecce, in
the middle of the Salento region in Puglia, Southern Italy. In Lecce you find
the oldest and most traditional nativity scenes organized as a Christmas fair
("Fiera dei pupi") - since the 14th century. The crib exhibition takes place
annually between Dec. 5 until 24 right downtown the picturesque and historic
center: thousands of figures and cribs made out of "Cartapesta" and "Terracotta"
are shown and will for sure show enlighten with its great variety of styles,
sizes and also affordability. All cribs are handmade and especially created for
the annual Christmas event by the regional artists. At the same time, the
ancient downtown area of Lecce with all its baroque cathedrals and mansions
welcomes the visitor on a tour. Strolling along and discovering "Lecce-the
beautiful", the visitor will also find many trendy and traditional taverns,
restaurants and other gourmet spots. Caffebars and pastry shops are a real treat
for a sweet afternoon in Lecce with its Christmas specialties (such as
"Carteddhate", "Purcidhuzzi", "Chinolicchi" and "Pittule al vincotto"). Besides,
many designer boutiques and also the different galleries of the local artists
are for sure a special destination while being in Lecce and will enrichen the
visit with a Christmas shopping tour. After touring around, the traveler can
enjoy relaxing moments at the Caroli Hotels - traditional hideaways which are
right at the seaside of Santa Maria di Leuca and Gallipoli. How to get there!?
From all major German and international airports, airlines are connected with
Italy and the nearer airports of Bari or Brindisi. Upon request and booking
before traveling, the Caroli Hotels also organize an individual shuttle service
incl. native language tourguides. Welcome!
